Folks--

In a month my wife and I will be arriving in Hefei with a small child (18 mos) and living in the Anhui University area.  We'll be in Hefei for at least six months.  We are interested in hearing from other expats who have lived in Hefei with kids.  Is it pretty child-friendly?  Any trouble getting disposable diapers?  Any experiences with childcare?  Is the public transport decent, or do folks mainly use bikes and taxis?  My wife and I are both experienced travelers, and my wife speaks Chinese and has lived extensively in China.  However, we're new to the "extended overseas travel with kiddie" game.  Any thoughts would be welcome.  Thanks for your time.  I apologize if I am duplicating any existing thread.

I don't have any kids, but I can surely comment about what to use for travel around Hefei.  I strongly recommend you use taxi to get around.  You have a small kid, and because of that, I wouldn't risk taking the bus with so many people packed in like sardines, or the chance of getting run down by many "chicken playing" cars/trucks/buses.  The taxi fare starts off at 6 RMB, and if someone on this site knows how far that can take you before the meter starts adding more, then that would be great.  Sometimes I see people chase them down to get one, so get ready to do a track race to get one for your family on the occasion.

It works on distance travelled and wait time. I think you get about 3-4 km and 5 mins wait.
