Does anybody know a good place to by jewelry, specifically a gold necklace for my girlfriend? Better yet, does anybody actually have any experiencing buying jewelry his- or herself? I'm anxious that if I do the job myself, the jewelers are going to jack up the price as soon as the see my lost laowai face.

If you are looking for quality, there are places at Yuan Yi (Times Square) near the main entrance.
Also there are places at the CBD BaiDa in San Xiao Kou.
I suggest you check them out first to get an idea on quality and range then look for prices including checking standard gold prices.
In particular, China Gold at the front of CBD.  I also suggest you study up on "Hallmarks". I know little about Chinese hallmarks.
