Is there any place that I can withdraw money from my American account via an ATM? I have yet to find an ATM that takes a Visa or Matercard from the states.  I have been told that Citi-bank, Bank of America and JP Morgan/Chase are in China but I have not been able to locate them here or on-line in China.

Thanks- Harmony

Hello:

Just got to Hefei a few days ago for work and will be around for a month.  I have some cash that I thought I would exchange but using a debit card might be easier; won't have to talk to anyone. For exchange rates and such which bank is the best to use?  Or more simply put, what bank would you recommend using.

Thanks,

PS. I have found this community/website very useful and friendly and I appreciate all of the useful info contained here.

I found the "Bank of China" has most services in China and abroad.

You can also set-up a foreign currency account. e.g. money from any country in any currency deposited is automatically converted to to the account currency, mine is Australian dollars.

You can link this with a BOC standard RMB account and transfer via internet banking. Handy for fluctuating currency.

The Construction Bank and BOC were the first banks to float on the international markets. Also, these banks usually have an English speaker available, although limited at times.

What do you need as a foreigner to set up a bank account- preferably in USD?
I would only use it to transfer funds in and out of China....
