Hefei City
«
on:

I really feel that this city, Hefei, is being run by a bunch of monkeys.
The current state of this city, due to all the fixing of roads, expanding of roads, and whatever else you can do with roads, is really a sad sight. I really wish they can start something in a certain area, small area, finish that, then move on. But no, that is not how they do things here. I would say that 90% of the roads near my home (Hu Po area) have either been worked on, or is planning on being worked on soon. I am losing my mind. I can understand all the apartment buildings going up and so on, but this is different. This involves people changing their driving/biking routes, as well as dirtying up a huge area, and just putting up with a lot of crap in general.
Vent ended.

Yes the construction around Ke Da was horrible last semester when they were building Jin Zhai Lu and Huang Shan Lu. It was impossible to take a bus to work and the taxi drivers would refuse to take me to that area because of the road construction. Also all the dust and debris in the air lead to the majority of our teachers here getting sick with colds and coughs. Even the road to the airport was impassable for a while there.
Its gotten better now but still the polution and inconvenience of construction takes a heavy toll on all of the people who live in Hefei.

Oh, so they are finished the construction there? I didn't know that. I remember before, man, that area was so bad. So, I understand what you went through at that time. This Hu Po thing is awful because they are changing a somewhat peaceful, serene area, into a big city roadway, from what I was told.
Pity.

well yea in some area's there are more bridges in one place than any other place which would need them the most it's allso quite confusing it reminds me of shanghai though abit i guess thats their plan all along to make enother shanghai and i love hefei so much i do wish for it to be more modernized but at the same time they need to be more creative and follow up on more safety procedures many sights are far too dangerous and they have no walls or any other place to allow passerby's

Just have a look at Changjiang Lu and you'll realise that Hefei is a disaster area.

Wolfgang, I hear you. I was recently on that road, and man......disaster area growing into something more. Ah....the Hefei I once knew. Those were the times. When HuPo was the "in" place, clean and serene. Now, it looks like a war torn area. Whatever. As long as they finish this mess soon, and I mean soon, then we can get back to what a city should look like.......clean.

Aye, agree with all of the above. Total mess, but what city in China isnt? It's not going to end anytime soon either. They have to construct using the cheapest quality materials, and migrant farmer labour. Imagine what would happen if suddenly the city was "finished" and all the construction workers had to back to the country = disaster. They'll continue to dig up roads and replace them with concrete that'll crumble in 5 years, hyper job creation.
A taxi driver told me that it's even worse at the moment for two reasons: 1. that Hu jintao is president and is taking extra care to develop his own province. 2: The national games are being held in Hefei in 2010 and this is all in preparation.

JazzyDave, I agree with you.
My wife, who is Chinese, also mentioned the Hu Jin Tao thing you mentioned, but I do have to ask more about this 2010 thing. I never heard about it. Can you tell me (us) more?
Appreciate it.

I'd also like to hear more about this 2010 thing. By the way, does anybody know anything about that big stadium near Swan Lake, which was brandnew, when I arrived here? I've never heard about any important sport event, and I've always been wondering what it's good for.

well unlike the western countrys where we have big strong active workers and tools that work even in the most demanding duty's china has now far less workers and ever before and in the state that they are in they do everything by hand and if you notice how weak and boney they are this is the reason why they do everything at once and in allmost every location if they did it like you should it would take them 15 years to complete any task and the fact that most workers have a 2 hour lunch break and usually pay is about 800 to 1,100 rmb a month
p.s. can you do this kind of labor work just on a bowl of rice and pudding? and boiling hot water

Here's a link to a pretty useful article explaining the All-China games.
http://china.org.cn/english/sports/169889.htm
As far as i understand it, the stadium near Swan Lake was built specifically for the games (In a rare feat of the Anhui government planning something in advance!)
