A Chinese teacher with over 6 years' experience

Hi Guys,

I am a new comer in Hefei Expat.Nice to meet you all!

I am now a Chinese teacher in Shanghai ,but my hometown is in Hefei.I got my M.A. in applied linguistics in East China Normal University- one of the best university in teaching Chinese as a second language. I've been teaching Chinese for over 6 years and working as a part-time interpreter for about 2 years.

I won the first prize in the English speaking contest in my university when I was a freshmen and they specially arranged me to share an apartment with an American teacher for 3 months to do language exchange to prepare for "CCTV Cup English Speaking Contest" provincial final.

Since then, I found the problems when foreigners learning Chinese.

Most Chinese teachers would simply ask their students to memorize and give the translation without explaining why.And those guys who compiled Chinese textbooks were prone to show that they were of higher academic levels to explain those grammar points with some terms that foreigners could hardly understand.Meanwhile,I found lots of mistakes in English translations in some of current Chinese textbooks.

I've taught students of each level either in a class or in private lessons. I've got so many foreign students and friends from all over the world and they are always interested to know something about Chinese language and Chinese Culture.

I'd like to go back to Hefei next year and what I can do now is to share something with you for you to know Chinese language and culture better.

Today- November 11th is called "guang1gun4 jie2(Bachelor's Day)" , literal translation would be "single stick Day". Why??

Because "1" looks like a stick and means "single" in Chinese culture. When four "1" comes together , you can imagine it. And today is "2011.11.11", we call it "chao1ji2 (super) guang1gun4 jie2" ,for we have six "1" together. You will find more sigle guys and girls in bars tonight. You can approach them and ask "Ni3 dan1shen1 ma?(Are you single)" to see what will happen.

Have a nice day!

To be continued.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have problems in Chinese learning.

You are so cool! I am also a Chinese teacher. I found the most difficult thing for a Chinese learner is the five tones. I have taught Chinese for less than one year. I also have some questions in teaching Chinese.
