My List.

Consistently All easily accessible in China
Hefeiexpat - My main source of connections both social and business.
HefeiConnect - If you are living here, you need this one.
WeChat     - Handy tool for maintaining contact.
Linked in    - Good for business and career contacts.
Skype        - Video link, voice and text.

Occasionally Requires VPN service
Facebook   - I maintain a presence.

Rarely
Yahoo Messenger - was a great program in its day but still has uses.

Never
Twitter - I never really used Twitter, I have hefeiexpat.com
MSN     - I never liked nor trusted MSN, it was a favourite for hackers, I used yahoo messenger.
QQ       - To open and to easy to get hassled.

I rarely use social networks I can't easily access in China.

1. WeChat
2. QQ

Personally, I only use QQ because I don't have a smart phone. Not sure I'd use WeChat even if I had a smart phone.

I'm not sure about Instagram. But regardless, get a VPN before you come. The Chinese government is rather fickle when it comes to what's blocked and what isn't. A popular VPN is Astrill. I use 12VPN. It should cost you around $7 a month for a paid one and I suggest getting a paid one. Mostly because they tend to keep up with Chinese censorship so when the Chinese government decides to change how they filter traffic, it doesn't break your VPN.
