Mail...can it be any worse than in Hefei? When I left my University and found a new apartment, I did not get any mail for six months! I had Chinese friends attempt to find out where it went, to no avail. So, I went to work at a University. An EMS letter came for me, but the Chinese person across from my office said she did not know anyone who works for the University that has my name, so she sent it back! I asked where it was, the staff person said "What post office did it come from?" I said, "how would I know, since I never saw the envelope!" The person in charge of Foreign Affairs said "what was the number on the envelope?" I said, "how would I know, since I never saw the envelope!" They said I should know who it came from in America. I said, how would I know who it came from, since I haven't received any mail in over six months? Round and round this discussion went. No one could call the post office, no one could go to the post office, no one would take responsibilty for the quaranteed delivery letter. My National Geographic magazines went to a person in another building. The person, seeing my name in English, thought it was his name, and kept all the mags and maps. Then, he decided to pass one to me. No one would confront him, no one thinks this is a problem except for me. I will not tell you about my blocked phone, this I will save for another post! Grrrr....Or, the Bank of China, who for twelve visits with Chinese speakers, still cannot change my address for my statements and credit card. Double grrrrr....
