Where can I find a cheap used car ??
« on: February 28, 2008, 05:14:08 am »

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in purchasing a cheap car or van.
Anything from a Santana to a Jin Bei van or similar will be fine.
Im not looking for a well looked after car,
just something that runs.
If anyone can give me an address or know of someone with
a cheap car for sale, I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks.  :)

Tim,

Thanks for your advice. Can you suggest a newspaper I might find useful?
I noticed there are shops that sell very used motorbikes around the place.
Would this mean there are caryards too?

Thanks again,

 :)

Get yourself a tuo laji. the very best in Chinese manufacturing.

Seriously though, there are a couple of used car markets on Chang jiang xi lu between Carrefour (Wu li dun) and Er Huan lu (Ring Road 2). They are on on your right hand side as you head out of town. I'll try to get a more specific address next week - i pass them on my way to work.
I'm not sure what prices are like (I've got a 100kuai bike - does me fine!), from the main road it looks like they have a pretty wide selection.

You can register a 750cc motorbike if it's a three wheeler (tricycle, sidecar).
I'm planning on buying one from Shanghai, 24,000 RMB for a fully reconditioned 1960 Chinese BMW.

They are a copy of the old series of BMW made in China.

Actually, the Chinese brand motrocycles with side care are not a copy of the WWII BMW, but from the Zündapp.
This was the famous German three-wheeled veteran that served a/o in North Africa.
After the Nazi's were defeated, the Russians dismantled the plant that was in Eastern Germany and started production of the Russian clone.
Some were imported into Europe in the '70s under the name "Ural".

The Chinese is a clone of this URAL.

Altough technically similar to BMW, the Chinese boxer-engined motrocycle with side-car is actually a copy of the URAL, who is again a copy of the Zündapp.

In Beijing it is the Yuppy's weekend transportation, when they leave their Mercs at home.
Also in DaShanZe 798 art district they are a common sight.

There is an active club in Beijing that organizes trips throughout China.

Perhaps an idea to lead them past Hefei (on their way to Huangshan???)

What a coincidence! I was planning on buying one through Luke as well!
And you can pick your own specs!
I was planning on riding one from Hefei to Calcutta, India via the Freedom Highway/Tibet.
When I arrive in Calcutta the plan was to get the bike on a ship to Darwin, Australia.
I hit a big paradigm because Australia requires sidecars on the left, and China must register
the sidecars on the right.
So my next thought was to get a cheap car and sell it in India, and fly to Aus.

Yes true, but from what i've heard from Long River Motorworks, a left sidecar chassis is different from a right sidecar chassis so unless I can bring one with me or have one trucked to india prior.. hmm.  ???

even though the side car is on the right it is possible to put the side car on the left side you can bring it to australia and then have it removed and replace it on the legal side or you maybe able to do that while in india and then have it shipped that way you can still ride the side car legally once you arrive.
