The title pretty much explains it. 

I recently went to the local China Telecom office to pay an overdue bill, and at that time, I complained why the heck is my 4MB internet connection feeling REALLY slow these days.  After I finished ranting about that, they motioned to a hanging poster, that had a big fat 20 on it.  I asked them what that meant, and they said for 199RMB per month, which is only about 15RMB or so more than what I am currently paying for 4MB, you can have blistering speeds of up to 20MB.  I was given a flyer about it, then I went home smilin' ear to ear.

I asked my wife to look over the flyer, and sure enough, what they told me at the local office was true.  For 199RMB per month, you can get up to 20MB speed for your internet.  Maybe I am missing something here, but that is a 5 fold increase from the current level for me, for only an additional 15RMB more.  Can't go wrong with that.

I read about this before, that Chinese IP companies will increase the speeds and decrease the price, but this came a bit earlier than I imagined.

just remember, that's max not continuous and it will depend on your computer, traffic  and wiring.
Still it's a hell of a lot faster.

I'm a bit busy today, but I will be having it installed within a few days, for sure.

But keep in mind, in addition to what Aussie Mike pointed out, the overseas websites won't be popping up any faster.  Maybe a bit or whatever, but some of the people over at Shanghai Expat mentioned that "there is still the GFWC to contend with".  I am hoping that at least there is a bit of a change.  At least the stuff in China will be sped up BIG time, over what I am getting now.

Your speed will improve greatly, especially when there is less traffic whether it's local or international. The broadband width acts like a pipe. The smaller the bandwidth, the less traffic can flow through. 20 Mb is like having a storm water drain pipe connected to your shower drain.  If only one person is showering, the water will flow away as fast as it falls but if you try to empty your swimming pool it can only flow as fast as the size of the pipe.

I'd hazzard a guess that you will need fibopt outside as the backbone but the wiring inside shoud only require the higher quality, new standard phoneline.

Well, take my name out of the hat.

Fei Cui Yuan is not in the cards, for this 20 MBPS internet.  I was told by the girl there that because it's an old area, so....then I said, ok, what about Hu Po?  She said they have, or will have it.  I said WTF, why them and not us?  I didn't get a clear reply.  Everywhere complex around me is getting it, or has it at the moment, but not ours.

So I asked, what about the future, and she pretty much stood firm with what she already told me.  Well, the only logical thing to do is move, and that is what I am in the process of doing.  No way are people around me going to enjoy 20 MBPS while we lay in the stone age.

I was thinking about what to do, because at the moment, moving is not an option for me.    So then I thought, what about checking out China Unicom.

I was with them before, but switched a while back because at the time, China Telecom was rocking the higher internet speed.  But at the moment, because I am left out of the 20 MBPS loop, I was thinking to check in with China Unicom to see if they offer their new 21MBPS service to Fei Cui Yuan.  I think they run it on tv cable, so maybe that is what is the dominant line here in my complex.

I will report back once I get some more info.  Now it's time to scour the area near my place for a China Unicom branch, to grab a brochure.  BTW, anyone currently using China Unicom?  A while back, in I think March, I read an online article saying that they had 7 MBPS, and that 21 MBPS was on the way.

How quickly things change.

My wife got a repair guy to take a look at our line.  He found a problem and fixed it, but the thing that got me giddy was that I asked the guy, why isn't my area getting hooked up to this new LAN cabling, and he said we will be, around June or July.  That is MUCH better news than when I asked the girl at the payment center near my house, who said that our area doesn't have it, and won't have it.

I am BACK on top of the world.  But I will say, I am intrigued by the 21 MBPS internet that I mentioned from China Unicom.  If someone can check the prices for Hefei, I would GREATLY appreciate it.  I too will check my area once I get the chance.

i paid 159 each month , 4MB speed internet , enough for myself ....  and i got ITV , which i can watch TV .and movies . and i got telephone fee for 159 rmb (never used anyway ) , but not bad. i like the ITV .

Lucky guys... I only can get TieTong in my apartment... No China Telecom.. for whatever reason. They told me they don't serve my building. Which is strange since the buildings in front of me in the same complex all have Telecom....

near my work place. 金星家园。that is at 繁华大道，松林路。It's where the stadium, the exhibition center and the foreign language school is.

Tim, how can you get it that high?  That doesn't make sense, at least not to me.  If this Wifi router is attached to your home internet line then the most you can get is 10MBPS.

I would really be interested in hearing how you get that high of internet speed, because that's nuts.
