Tongqing lou (同庆楼). This restaurant chain is renowned in Hefei, known by all. These restaurants are big, standalone buildings with facilities for weddings and other functions. The food and settings are upper-range, and the service is professional. Usually no English menus or English-speaking staff. The prices are above average but not exorbitant. A group of four might expect to pay 1200元 (all together); a larger group of around 10 might expect to pay around 3000元.

Luzhou Wife (庐州太太 Lúzhōu tàitài). This is a renowned chain of restaurants in Hefei, known by all. They are lower-mid range, vibrant, bustling, open-plan restaurants that serve the standard Hefei dishes. Often need to book ahead during peak hours. Menus are in Chinese, no English or pictures.

Grandma's Home (外婆家 Wàipó jiā). This chain has a strong reputation in Hefei. The menu is expansive and includes English descriptions without pictures. Prices are lower-mid range, and the food quality is usually very good. The restaurant is always busy at peak hours.

Quanjude (全聚德). This is a very famous, long-established chain of roast duck restaurants in Beijing. Solid upper-mid range. In 2013, they opened a restaurant in Hefei. Sells Beijing and Sichuan food. South Beauty (俏江南饭店 Qiàojiāngnán). These is a chain of restaurants with food from the south. This is a solid mid-range chain with dishes quite different from those normally found in Hefei. The decor and atmosphere is a little more sophisticated than in other lower-mid range chains. Price is about 150-180元/head.
- South Beauty 1912 Street (俏江南饭店俏江南1912店). This location is a little bit out of the city, but the atmosphere and decor is a little bit more relaxed

- South Beauty Yintai Center (俏江南饭店合肥银泰店). This restaurant is located in the new, upscale Yintai Center. Modern and sophisticated. 长江中路98号

- South Beauty Wanda Plaza (俏江南饭店万达锦悦店). This location is usually busier than the other two. Food is just as good though. 包河区万达广场 6th

Gang Ding Hui (港鼎汇). This is a Hong-Kong hotpot restaurant that has only been open a few years but is rapidly gaining a good reputation. The interior is classy with Hong-Kong style chandeliers and diner booths. Food is interesting and good quality, southern China style. Tianyi Xiao Guan (天意小馆). This is a Beijing restaurant with roast duck as its specialty. The food is standard, mid-range. Prices are about 50-80/head. This restaurant isn't exceptionally good or bad, but it does have the advantage of a varied menu with big pictures and English. So it's easy for foreigners to order. Hupo Eat Street (琥珀山庄美食街 Hǔpò shānzhuāng měishí jiē) Go at night for street food, esp. longxia, and bbq. Best in spring and summer when everyone is eating and drinking outside. This is basically street food and small, basic restaurants. Popular stock-standard dishes but nothing out of the ordinary. Great for the late-night atmosphere.
Ninguo Rd. Longxia Street (宁国路龙虾美食街 Níngguó lù lóngxiā měishí jiē) Hefei’s specialty is lóngxiā, a small lobster-like creature that is eaten in summer with dipping sauces and beer. A number of longxia restaurants line this street.
Hefei 1912 Street (合肥1912酒吧街 Héféi 1912 jiǔbā jiē) 黄山路与怀宁路交叉口 Huángshān lù yǔ Huáiníng lù lùkǒu. Intersection of Huangshan lu and Huaining lu. This is a more upmarket place with a number of popular bars and restaurants.
Snow Villa (雪霁山庄 Xuě jì shānzhuāng) 合肥市蜀山区玉兰大道8号(近名人馆) Héféi shì shǔshān qū yùlán dàdào 8 hào (Magnolia Ave., at the foot of Dàshǔ mountain). This is a pretty unique kind of traditional Anhui opera hall and restaurant. Watch performances in the evening and eat hui cuisine. Good cultural experience. Call for show times ph: 5165777, 5388587
Tairyo Teppanyaki (大渔铁板 Dà yú tiě bǎn). This is a Japanese restaurant located on the 6th floor of the Yingtai Center on Changjiang Rd. I have been to this place a few times and have been pretty impressed every time. I found the food + presentation to be quite a bit above average, and the atmosphere is sophisticated and subdued, not crazy busy. You can sit around a teppanyaki grill or have your own table. Standard special of 168RMB (lunch) or 180RMB (dinner) per person for all-you-can eat + drink (incl. sake, Japanese beer, plum wine etc). There is another similarly priced Japanese restaurant on the same level called Kamii (上井 in Chinese).
