The PSB Rant
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:24:58 am »

For the past 5-6 years, going to the PSB to renew my visa has been uneventful, which is how I like it.  But this recent trip to the PSB, has me wanting to get out of China even more now.

They usually do it in a week, then you can pick up your passport via a slip they issue you.  Well, I tried to do that last week, and was told it was not there.  I had to go to the second floor, to inquire as to why that was.  I went there, and after bouncing around from door to door, I found the person that I handed my passport to the week before.  I asked her what the holdup was, and she told me to wait a bit.  Her and another police officer (guy) went into an office, were they chatted a bit about some things.  Later on, an assistant (later I learned it was an actual police officer, who was dressed down that day) told me that the visa was not ready, and that they needed more time.

I said to her, usually this gets done in a week, why the holdup?  She said she didn't know, because she is not the one I handed my passport to in the first place.  When I asked to speak with the lady officer that did, she said they are a bit busy now, and for me to come back a few days later.

That was Thursday of last week.  Forward to today (Tuesday)....I again went to the 6th floor to show them my receipt, to get my passport back, and once again, they said it wasn't ready, so go talk with the second floor people again.  Before I did that, I spotted the officer, who I thought was an assistant that other day, as to why again is my visa not ready.  There is a it of a story here that made me more upset, but I will spare the words.

Onto the second floor, I tried to relax myself as much as I could, to ask a male officer, why my passport wasn't ready for pickup.  There were two other male officers in the room at the time, one of them being the one that had a meeting with that female officer last week.  So, he said some things to the guy I spoke with, just briefly, then the guy I was speaking with told me that when it's ready, they will call me.  I said that is not acceptable, because I had some people send money to me for a business transaction, and more will come.  Without my passport, I can't remit the money from abroad.  So, I asked for a deadline, and they said Thursday.  I said, "zhen de?", they said yes.

I REALLY have had enough of China's BS.  This just adds piss to the fire, and makes me consider going back to Canada even more of a reality now.  Anyways....have any of you experienced anything like this of late?  Last week, I saw another foreigner, black guy, on the second floor as well for some reason.

Rant over.  Thanks for listening.

Hmmm,

When there is a delay with the PSB, it's usually due to a complaint made by someone about you or some irregularity in paperwork which they need to resolve before they can process.

The problem is, NO ONE will tell you what, why or who.

These complaints can be false and often vengeful, ask yourself if you have had an argument with anyone lately who has the spite to screw you around.

If yes, then you have a starting point to resolve the issue yourself.

Keep your cool with the PSB, open communication and they will resolve it for you, they know who you are and that you are of good character, just another laowai with a short fuse... :)

In fact, I'm impressed with how the PSB do deal with false accusations against foreigners. I've had 2 cases in 7 years and I know of quite a few others. The Chinese do not do it a second time, the consequences for such actions are well impressed upon them.

The PSB is probably one of the better run departments considering the pressures on all who work there and do business there. Cultural differences and personalities. Not a place I wish to work, that's for sure.

That's an interesting point about the 6-7 year itch. 18 months ago I was ready to bug out but was offered opportunities that enticed me to stay.  There are not many of us who have done more than 7.

I just thought I would put this message thread to rest, letting you all know that I picked up my passport without any incident.  I appreciate the fact that they like to do their work "behind closed doors", but I am a man that needs to know everything that is going on with whatever it is that I am involved with.  So, for the 2 weeks extra I had to wait, was pure torture.

But at last, this PSB rant thread is now complete.
