Hi I am coming to Hefei to live on the 4 th of October
« on: September 23, 2010, 03:14:37 am »

Hi everyone, I am new to this site.  ::)

I am 21, female. I am from New Zealand and I am coming to Hefei to live for five years from the 4 th of October.

I will be coming to study Medicine in Anhui Medical University as an international student. I will be staying at the university hostel when I arrive.

Do anyone know what the condition of the hostel at Anhui Medical University?  ???

I would like to know as much as possible about anything! I would love to make new friends and have advice from people that are just like me.

Thanks peoplez

I'm sure you will enjoy your time. the course is good from what I've heard. The housing will be below your normal standards but still reasonable. There are many good people here and the other new students I've met in Hefei seem to be quite an intersting bunch.

Hi Mike and Rachel  ;D

Thanks for your reply, it is nice to hear from you. I have just got a few more questions and is wondering if you guys can help me out.

I heard in China you can t access skype, is that ture?

How much do you think it cost a year to live outside of university for one person if I was to stay somewhere average? eg rent, power, food, internet etc

I am already registered as an Independent Midwife in New Zealand, am I able to work in China as a midwife?

Sorry I have so many questions THANKS FOR YOUR TIME , I am looking forward for your reply!

Skype is not a problem.
Facebook however is.

As a student on a student visa, you are not permitted to work. As far as your qualifications is concerned, you sould be able to work here as a midwife. Don't quote me on that, I'll get my assistant to look into it for you. Although you will be able to work as an English teacher as you have the special skills for medical English etc.

Rent can vary from 800rmb up to 2000rmb but there are places that go for over 5000rmb. You can get some great apartments for around 1500rmb. expect it to cost a single person with moderate spending habits and living conditions around 3000rmb per month. If you have a job which pays 3000rmb per month, you will find it difficult to travel and entertain yourself.

Thank you Mike for your reply.

I am wondering where can i find any international student that can give me some information on the condition of living in the international hostel?

Also NZ only have given me a one year student visa with only one entry into China, they told me I have to get it changed to a multiple entry visa in China once I got there, how does that work? My university study is for five years, do I have to apply for a new student Visa every year?

Thanks Mike

Shuai, message another user on here named "Henry", he should be able to tell you the info you need regarding your visa question.  He is a student at Anhui University, and he also has to jump through the usual hoops for staying in China.

I can't be sure about student visas but Z visa do work like that.
You get the entry and then within 1 month you need to get it changed to the residency visa which is 12 months and multiple entry.
I feel confident that it is the same for students.

hi mike thanks for that

I have arrived in hefei on the 4th and it has been very hard because it is chinese holiday till the 8th and I can not get anything done, I had to stay in a hotel till tomorrow till the school opens, and find it very difficult to adjust to the environment here compared to New Zealand.

There are not many foreign people here as I expected and the hostel living conditions are poor compared to what I am used to.

I am questioning myself about my decision to study here for the next four years.  :-\

how did you feel when you first moved to hefei? How long have you been here ? how long did it take you to settle ?

Student here, but working at Holiday Inn.

It took us about a week to settle down.

Compared to my own country, yes...you can see people throwing things everywhere, split, honking the cars even though there are no cars in front of them...but the people here are nice, they help us to integrate to their environment. Do you have roommate or anything? talk to them and ask them bring you around. There is walmart and careefour (I prefer the careefoure at Guo Kou shopping Centre).

If you not used to the student hostel, maybe you could start looking around for a room or an apartment outside. I think the people in this forum will provide you with great information. After all I am only less than a month.

Each country, city, environment is different. Enjoy the unique experience you going to have.

There are quite a few foreigners here but you rarely see them, I know about 250 at a guess but there are more than 3000 here including asian foreigners.

It usually takes a couple of weeks to settle in, you will meet quite a few foreigners the longer you stay but they keep moving each year.

Send me a text with your name and country so I cn put you on the text out list of things happening about town.
