Due to the approaching 60th anniversary (Oct. 1 is China National Day), the visa practical rules are quite tight.

But it is still possible to have your F visas extended.
The visa conversion service (from L to F) is quite expensive. You can have L visas extended for 1 more month and do the conversion at the end of Oct., 2009. It can be cheaper then after the big event.
