True or not, I don't know.  Just putting it out there.

I think the issue is that the Chinese system does not report numbers beyond 500 and it can easily surpass 500.

Also, I find this amusing:

Because, telling people their air is killing them is something to be avoided.

I've been consistently checking the air quality index for Hefei, and the AQI levels here often surpass those of Beijing and even Linfen. And yes, I think prevalent construction plays a large part in this. Living in Hefei may be hazardous to your health

Does anyone have experience with air purifiers? Or going about finding legit info on good purifiers?

Expect to pay a few thousand RMB for a decent one and make sure it's HEPA Certified.

It looks like the heavy pollution we've seen in Hefei is going to be a long term or perhaps even permanent problem, since three days of rain failed to disperse it. I'm surprised not more action has been taken by the government to protect the health of its citizens, especially the kids. It should really be handing out free masks and keeping school aged kids at home. At the same time, I take it that most of the population are not all that bothered, since I see large number of people walking the streets without masks, which strikes me as a completely idiotic thing to do, since a good mask costs about 10 RMB and the pollution has regularly reaching hazardous levels. 

There's not much else that can be done about it, but people also advise installing an air filter at home, so that one uses one's 8 or so hours of sleep to effectively 'come up for air'. There is a DIY option which has been doing the rounds on the internet since the last great smog, and I have two going, one in my office and one in my bedroom. I post the links below, for those who wish to breathe and live.
