Hey there, I'm Ben. I will be coming (from England) to Hefei soon - in a month or two - as an English teacher for (at least) a year, and thought I would reach out here ahead of time to simply get the lay of the land. I don't currently speak Mandarin, save for a few words, but hope to find lessons when I get there, and am very gradually learning to read and write the language, though that is only in its infancy.
I'm very interested in history, literature and religion - local and national - and hope to find some places, events and people relating to those, as well as places to chill in general. I'm not a big party-goer these days, but I'm excited to see what the city has to offer regardless. :) I'm also hoping to become a regular at a gym/health centre in the city - or more preferably to take up a martial art - so any local recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Anyway, thanks for indulging my ramble. All the best. :)
Ben

Cool. I would advise you to put a lot of focus on learning language and passing exams. Use English teaching as a means to an end.

Welcome to the forum and warmer welcome for when you arrive.
Look me up when you get here and I'll introduce you to a few hangouts and social circles to get you started.
If you are looking for a change off lifestyle, you found it. ;D

Thanks for the tip! I'm definitely going to be putting a lot of effort into learning the language. :)

Thanks a lot, Mike! I will absolutely hit you up. Right now I'm just waiting on all the paperwork to process, but I am expecting the end of the June / beginning of July to be when things are moving. :)
