The minor gold rush we had in China a few months ago reminded me of a Star Trek episode about which I can remember only one detail. Riker ('Number One' to his friends) and another crew member land on a distant, unhabited planet. 'Why are we flying down here?' the crew member complains, 'There's nothing here but worthless gold.' The planet wasn't Earth, but it could have been.
