The news about "the man"
« on: May 04, 2012, 02:54:04 am »

This post will be worded in a way that doesn't draw unneeded attention to Hefei Expat.  The last thing we need is for this site to be blocked for stupid reasons.

I am not sure if you guys have been following the story about "the man" who went somewhere to seek justice because in his hometown, he wasn't getting it.  This thing really has ticked me off because just recently, someone from the Chinese Gov. talked about the US apologizing to China for interfering with domestic stuff.  WTF?  A citizen from your own country practically risked his life to gain freedom from people preventing him free movement within his hometown, and the US should apologize for taking him in?

I know there is a leadership change going on in China in the coming year, and I know they want to try to save face as best as possible, but I don't think the Gov. should ask for apology from anyone.  They should have taken an easy out instead that was suggested by a writer from some news outlet that mentioned a "medical leave to the US" as a face saving solution to it.  But now it's at a point, where he doesn't feel safe in China, regardless of what assurance was given in closed door meetings, and wants out.

This country REALLY needs to change.  Not because I say so, not because people from outside of China say so, but because your own damn citizens are asking for it.  Just listen for shit's sake.  >:(

Usually I don't go political on here, so this was new.  ;)

The interesting thing here is...

Many CC's express views in conversation but when they are relayed on by another voice, shock horror for even mentioning it.  ???

We support freedom of responsible speech.  I'm curious what response this will generate here.

Story is here

rgeczi,

i am surprised you are surprised..

or, actually, that you are still outraged!

and i emphasized still, because i think i remember you lived a long time in china and you know the country and the situation here pretty well.
so, for people from the outside it is normal to be shocked, outraged and disgusted by the demands of apologies.. but, i admit, to me sounded like the normal and expected reaction from the local government!

please, don't misunderstand me!! i of course do not agree with chinese demands!! the opposite! but i am far from being surprised or outraged.. anymore!!!

just think what happened a month ago in Chengdu: if the police officer had not got out of the american embassy, what do you think chinese gov. would have asked US?

i'd like to remind you a "similar story" that happened in Italy, this time not involving China, but that put strength between Italy and USA: given i do support the independence fight of Kurdistan (for personal reasons, and several close friendships), on a general base i would also always avoid extradition of a criminal to a country where there is death penalty (Turkey or US!). The story brought afterwards the filing of several asylum requests of Kurdish people in Italy, and that made Turkey go nuts!

So, what about US reactions to Italian attitude of giving asylum to Ocalan? True, "the man" now in China is not an active "violent" fighter, but the ground is similar, and even if i do hate violence at any level, i would as well give "hospitality" to the Kurdish leader instead of let US and Turkey government having their way!

http://www.nytimes.com/1999/01/17/world/kurdish-rebel-leader-who-is-wanted-by-turkey-leaves-italy.html

Of course, Italy is more sensible to US pressure than China.... but this i do not take it as a good thing!

back to your story, no, i was not shocked.. but then again, i am probably a cynical old b@st@rd that has read and seen too much sh*t to be surprised by this..

and still in china too few people, better, too few people among the ones that count, that has a weight in decision making are pushing for a change... but i agree, it will happen!! it must happen or the country will collapse!

more and more university students during english corners start asking me about unfiltered news and how to get them..

the time is coming my friend!

Kim, to my knowledge, this had nothing to do with him feeling like he was owed something because he is blind.  It is because he revealed injustices by local authorities.

Is it any surprise China has been recently cracking down on people forcing abortions on others?  Good for you "Blind Man".  ;)

"recently cracking down"..

the real problem is that they have been doing this since the start of one child policy.. and more often than not are the family killing (nowadays selling) the newborn girls...

it is about time that the international attention turns toward this.... instead of hiding behind useful (at politician level) excuses..
