My fear in China is being trapped in a fire.

The standard procedure is to block or lock any exits.  Look at schools, every door is chained or has so much crap barricading them it is impossible to escape.  I wonder how many people died in the earthquakes due to barred exits...

Yes, it appears much like that is the case. I believe students in dormitories are locked in and confined at night as well. Barred windows are also a fire trap hazard. They should of course have padbolts to at least swing open when unlocked.

I once considered purchasing abseiling equipment to escape in the incidence of a fire. I was living on the 27th floor, then 20th followed by the 12th and now the 6th. I have purchased a 30th floor apartment. When you think about it, maybe it makes sense for every high rise to have some form of rescue-escape method like that. From the 30th a base jump is possible.

The other major problem when working or living in any building is that there is no induction as to fire safety precautions, fire drills, fire escape plans etc. In a modern society, should there be an incident, the families could sue the arse off building management for negligent duty of care if deaths occur.

Recently there was a fire in a school in BengBu, fortunately no injuries. Now all schools there have been called in to be vigilant and ensure fire precautions are in place.  Grin
