Hong Kong

I'm going to Hong Kong in a few days to change my visa, and I'm traveling by myself!  In addition to being alone, this is my first time to Hong Kong, so I'm hoping this goes well.  I plan on taking some Chinese phrases etc with me as my grasp of the Chinese language is fairly low.

Has anyone here been to Hong Kong before?  What is there to do or see? Should I avoid certain areas or tourist traps?  Is it dangerous at night?  I've already had my iPhone stolen in Hefei, I don't need to lose anything else!  I'm checking some lists on Google as well, but I'm curious about what Lao Wei who aren't total tourists think.

Check out the YWCA in Kowloon is you are concerned. Fairly cheap and on bus routes but up the far end from Hong Kong Island.

Many people you meet will understand limited English, enough to get around. Follow your intuition if it works for you...

Not sure if it's still there. but if you find your way down to Kowloon.. head for the Beggers market. The street resturants are great. reconmend the chickhen in orange sauce YUMYUM.
MOst signs   are still in English and alot of people do have ( as mike said ) an ok grasp of english. although this is fading. Finding your way around is difficult to start, but you soon get used to it.. Good underground system , which is also very useful. Was there a few weeks ago ( just passed though ). Can be a nightmare but also alot of fun, so relax and enjoy it.
As far as dangerous?? again as much as any city i guess. Keep an eye on your purse, make sure its in view and always closed.  Hong KOng not really known for tourist traps ( unlike Beijing ) but im sure there are some, although i've never come across any.
