Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, the most wanted man in the world, has been killed, the country's rebel government claimed today.

The flamboyant tyrant who terrorized his country and much of the world during his 42 years of despotic rule was cornered by insurgents in the town of Sirte, where Gadhafi had been born and a stronghold of his supporters.

The National Transition Council said that its fighters found and shot Gadhafi in Sirte, which finally fell to the rebels today after weeks of tough fighting.

Libya's ex-leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after an assault on his birthplace of Sirte, officials say.

Acting Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril announced the death, and later said the colonel had been killed in a crossfire between Gaddafi loyalists and fighters from the transitional authorities.

He confirmed that Col Gaddafi had been taken alive, but died of bullet wounds minutes before reaching hospital.

Video footage suggests he was also dragged through the streets.

It is unclear from the footage, broadcast by al-Jazeera TV, whether he was alive or dead at the time.

Acting Justice Minister Mohammad al-Alagi told the AP news agency Saif al-Islam had been captured and taken to hospital with a leg wound.

A corpse that officials identified as that of Mutassim has been laid out in a house in the city of Misrata, where locals have been queuing to take pictures.

The body of Col Gaddafi has also reportedly been taken to Misrata.

I totally agree with you Mike. He was inhumanely sacrificed at a period in time when he had become a source of information to the west, a source of oil, but a self-regulated source of stability in what would be otherwise an unstable land of extremism. The grab for control of oil is becoming more desperate. Up until Gaddafi took control in 1969 at aged 27, Libya was occupied by Italy. Incidentally, Italy under an inept Berlusconi leadership, has debt totalling 120% of GDP. Italy has many reasons to gain greater access to Euro zone control of Libyan oil.

The following article will give us a vision of what Libya will be like in the near term future; a lawless, anarchist state. It will in my estimation morph into a violent sectarian state divided by self-willed minorities in a grab for land and property, will be dominated by strong-arm thugs and criminals, and will eventually fall under foreign policed occupation. Love him or hate him, Gaddafi was a charismatic leader who was able to maintain control and exert enforced yet unjust laws.

Al Jazheera has new footage now showing his murderer. Gaddafi was from the old school of Arab dominators; the new school are Islamic dominators.
