I went down to Metro yesterday and the range of bread has increased a little. They also had the large white toasting loaves for about 7 yuan I think. I picked up the wholemeal high-fibre bread in a small opaque dark green packet. One packet contains about 6 slices for a reasonable price. Actually, I don't care about the price so I don't know it. It is a heavy bread that I like so the cost is irrelevant.

A new RT Mart has opened near Gong Da and the bread there is pretty damn good. I'm a bread snob and rarely would I say that any in Hefei is "good", but this place (which opened yesterday and is friggin awesome) sells good bread. It also has donuts... Not crappy imitation donuts, but donuts that you can actually enjoy. And it's clean.

The Holiday Inn Downtown has good bread on sale in the lobby lounge. It is half price after 5.30 as are the cakes.
I spoke with Hari, the F&B manager, he will increase the range of breads to include multi-grain or others if the demand is there.

Almost every Chinese supermarket sells whats called "American Salt Style" bread. This is about as close to that classic white bread loaf as can be (assuming that is what you're after), not sweet.

Not my pick either, rarely eat the stuff. The post did say "no baguette" so I took this to mean not the old world crack a tooth artisan style breads (which by the way I am a fan) but rather a "white bread". The meaning of "real bread' is very subjective, could we have a bit of clarification from the poster?
Where is the Metro in Hefei and how does one gain membership?

If you guys ever make it to Beijing, come to a store called "Jenny Lou's" market. Very famous in Beijing and you will drool over all the fresh baked "real" bread.
I am convinced that the all it would take to make a successful expat supermarket would be to stock a good selection of bread and cheese

Metro is on the 2nd South Ring Road (Nan Er Huan) and HuiZhou Dadao.
That's the section going out to the airport.
Present ID (passport) and employer's business card when you visit.

The intersection is currently 'under construction' so it is a nightmare getting in and out or getting a taxi I suggest. Nevertheless, they are still open-for-business.

..and for metro you don't need any membership..
just get a little paper slip when you go in and give it at the cashier before paying..
i always do like that
as Kim says, attention also that right ow they are building around metro: 3 sides are completely packed and close to traffic.
a car can reach metro only from the east side

anyway, been there both by taxi and bus + little walk
