yo, yo, yo...

I don't know whether this really counts as news. But here's a video of another douchey foreigner making life difficult for the rest of us.

http://www.thenanfang.com/blog/watch-foreigner-offers-christmas-greeting-to-tv-reporter-show-me-your-boobs/

Some people never learn. But, for those born yesterday, let me tell you that one of the quickest way to make 1.3 billion enemies is to indulge in any kind of hanky panky with the opposite sex in public. I thought it was interesting the way the whole brief incident was played up in the sinister looking black-and-white reconstruction... but, really, he asked for it.

I'm just gonna sit back and watch this one unfold.

The thing I never liked about the term "wai guo ren" or " lao wai", is that lumps everyone outside of China all in to one group.  What if someone called a Chinese person, Japanese?  Would they like it?  Hell no, for obvious reasons, but also for other reasons.  So first off, if you are going to report the news about "wai guo rens", make sure to state where they are from, at the very least.

And second, yes, that guy was an idiot.

Sadly, when push comes to shove things do tend to degenerate into an 'us' vs 'them' mentality, here as elsewhere. I myself am often irritated by questions of the type, 'Why do you foreigners do such and such?' as if I could possibly answer for anyone other than myself, though I recognise that the questions are not deliberately offensive and sometimes even well-meaning.

But I do think that East Asia, and North East Asia in particular (Japan, Korea, China), is going through a phase of increasing nationalism. Foreigners should be careful not to provoke a situation in which they are likely to be ganged up on.

About the clip, my question is... Why did they air it?  Mummy will be so proud.

In regards to nationalism,  I don't think Chinese could be more nationalistic as they are already proud with what they have achieved globally and locally.  They are however becoming more discerning about who they invite to live here and less accepting of bad behaviour among foreigners.  Too right to!

I sometimes vent a little frustration about things in China. More usually bureaucracy related and how some things are taken for granted in western cultures but seem to be impossible in China.

I sometimes do not appreciate my audience's feelings and someone can become offended.
If I see this happening I completely reverse up and say!

"Please don't confuse my vent with how I feel about China, I have chosen to live here for 10 years,
I love China but some things are difficult for foreigners. even after 10 years".

I tend to chose my audiences for venting these days. Thanks guys for listening to me those times.

If you are interested, we could organise a vent night at the club to laugh about some of the vents we have had over the years. That could be rather interesting!

J Mac had a public vent go viral one year when they introduced having to show your passport when buying a train ticket.  That was funny. The video got blocked on all the Chinese sites, one after the other. It was even translated with Chinese subtitles.
