Can you drive in China with a foreign license
« on: January 22, 2012, 10:11:23 AM »

No. You can not drive without a Chinese license.

You can get yours translated then take it to the licensing department and get it endorsed for China

or sit a test with an interpreter.

"Endorsed for China"

What does this mean? I was under the impression foreign licenses are never valid here. Ever.

It must be translated into Chinese and certified by the police.

If you have a valid foreign drivers license, the process is relatively easy.

1. Take your DL to a local notary and gave it translated into Chinese.
2. Bring your Passport, Residency Permit, Foreign Expert Certificate, and DL to the driving test center. It's way far north in Hefei, takes about an hour by bus to get to.
3. Take the computer driving test. The test is offered in many different languages. You can bring a translator only if they are certified.

There's a lot of discussion on this site about how to convert an existing foreign license into a Chinese one. But what if you don't have any license to begin with. Has any foreigner ever enrolled in a driving school to take the driving part of the exam? Which school would thy recommend?

Do you know Richie from Shipyard? I think he went to driving school, and I'm under the impression that he knows someone or his father in law or something owns a driving school? I could be completely making that up, I don't know. But, I'd get in touch with Richie at Shipyard.
