Travel / Borrow a bicycle
« on: January 02, 2016, 02:33:29 AM »
I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have a bicycle I could borrow for a day?  I have a bike, but my brother is visiting and I plan on doing a ride to see the countryside outside of Hefei.

Shopping and Restaurants / PS4 (non-legit)
« on: June 13, 2015, 04:24:44 AM »
A friend of mine is looking for a PS4 that has games preloaded? I already tried Taobao, but those PS4's only come with 1 or 2 games... I guess I'm looking for the illegitimate electronics part of Hefei.

Social / Events in Hefei
« on: May 22, 2015, 12:50:28 PM »
My partner and I are looking for some fun events in the next few days. Does anyone know of anything interesting going on in Hefei from 5/22 - 5/25? We were really hoping to hit a concert, opera, etc before we head to Tibet. Thanks if anyone has any info!!

(sorry to be posting so often!)

Social / Visiting Hefei (again)
« on: May 19, 2015, 01:10:44 PM »
Hey all, I will be in town for a few days starting on Thursday, and would like to know if anyone would like to grab a beer or two? Do people on this forum typically just head to a particular social-gathering ground?  I didn't really frequent bars when I previously spent some time in Hefei.

Also, I am planning on doing some medium-distance cycling if anyone enjoys that kind of thing.

Discussions and opinions / Will postcards be stolen?
« on: June 16, 2012, 02:06:22 AM »
I have a lot of postcards I want to send home, and I have covered them in cool looking stamps and art.  I am just wondering if they will be stolen?  I wasn't thinking this until my Chinese friend told me he thought they would be stolen at the post office...

Learning Chinese / Pinyin typing
« on: June 02, 2012, 12:55:33 PM »
I have been typing in pinyin for a while, but I don't often have a need to do it.   I'm wondering if there is some good software for practicing pinyin or if there is a good way to utilize it?  I mean, I don't have much of a need to type in pinyin otherwise.

Shopping and Restaurants / Ideas for souvenirs
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:27:16 AM »
I am going home for a couple months in the summer, and I want to bring some souvenirs as gifts.  It doesn't matter if they are cheap for expensive.  I will add my ideas below.

Money works well; I'm bringing home a handful of Chinese and HK coins and bills.
Some purses and random things I bartered for in HK.
A few free, Chinese-produced, English newspapers from USTC.
Several Chinese books for kids from street vendors, and also some neat notebooks for children from Walmart.
I might also get some cheap replicas of famous brands if I see them.

Also, last time I went home I brought a Chinese tea-set (a bit touristy) with some figurines that change color with hot water.  It looked nice, but it has so many small fragile parts and takes up too much space.

So, yeah, add your ideas for souvenirs or gifts!

Discussions and opinions / My Chinese teacher wants to double the rate
« on: March 30, 2012, 07:29:59 AM »
I have had a student teaching me for about 5 months.  He is a friend's graduate student.  I have been paying him 50 RMB per hour, and having 1 hour per week.  He is not very good, and now he told me today that he thinks he should be paid 100 per hour because my friend had initially told him it would be 100/hour.  Well that was only because there was initially to be 2 students in the class, but that fell through.

Anyways, I am going to tell him no, give him a small raise and hope he gets better, OR just tell him I don't need a teacher anymore.

I am wondering, though, what the rates are for Hefei for a teacher?  I don't mind overpaying a bit IF they are good, but I feel this teacher of mine if full of it.  I mean, I have like 5 million people to choose from, but I know that many of them have poor English or perhaps would make poor teachers.

Shopping and Restaurants / Road bicycles and unicycles
« on: March 29, 2012, 02:49:14 AM »
So I had my bicycle stolen a few months ago, and with the weather warming up, I feel the need to replace it!  I was going to get a cheapie second-hand bike, but I realized I want to bike outside of Hefei to Chao Lake and other places.  So I want to find a road bike.  Yesterday I went to a Giant bicycle dealer, but they only have heavy mountain bikes.  I know Wal-mart only carries moutain bikes as well.  Anyone know of a place that sells road bikes?

I am also looking for a unicycle, since I saw a little girl riding one two days ago, and for the hell of it :)

Photos / Photos of Hefei, Dalian, Xinxiang, Nanjing, Hong Kong etc
« on: February 01, 2012, 01:05:44 PM »
Mostly Hefei and those cities, but a couple other places as well.  It auto-updates to my 30 best shots.  The four photos below are all from Hefei.

Discussions and opinions / Youtube video of a Chinese woman

Hope you like it, those of you that can view Youtube.  Hmm, perhaps I'll post it on the Chinese video service as well..

Travel / What to do in Xiamen
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:39:56 AM »
I just arrived in Xiamen, and wondering if any of you have been here and what is there to do?

Living Here / Network supplies?
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:59:00 PM »
I am modifying a cable for my camera, and I am in need of some QUALITY network supplies.  I am looking for a cable punch, wire strippers, and some jacks for ethernet cable.  I checked out the Xin Shuguang Department Store located at Su Song Lu and Jinzhai Lu, but the quality of what I could find was total crap, to the point that I am having trouble getting it to work.

Perhaps this stuff is too specific, but does Hefei have a place like this?

Living Here / Chinese vs Foreign iPhones
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:32:16 AM »
My iPhone was stolen a few months ago, and I have been using a Chinese phone since then.  It works, but I rely on my phone a lot, and it is just not good enough.  One of my biggest problems with this phone is the fact that it directs me mostly to Chinese webpages, and the map search is in Chinese as well as apps.

I want to replace my iPhone, perhaps with a used one, but I don't know if I should buy in China or in America.  Does anyone else with a Chinese phone or iPhone have the issue of being directed to Chinese websites etc?    I am wondering if an iPhone purchased in China would have this issue.

Living Here / Starbucks Locations
« on: January 01, 2012, 01:38:50 AM »
Well, I just tried Google, as well as Baidu, in English and Chinese, and apparently there are no Starbucks in Hefei (Baidu showed just 1)! Even Starbucks store locator showed no Starbucks in Hefei.  That's not correct...  I'm going to post the Starbucks I know of, and since they open so fast, please post any that I missed.

Fortune Plaza on Suixi Road, ground level.  This Starbucks just opened in November.

Wanda Plaza, 1st Floor (Near Rolex and KFC in the main building)  This location just opened today.

The east end of the pedestrian street, Hue He Lu Bu Xing Jie. (Across the street from Mingjiao Temple, and next door to KFC)
