Kaibo, not all Chinese dentists are as you say.  Just ask Aussie Mike about his experience with a dentist from Hupo.  I don't think it's fair to lump all into one group.  You think all western trained dentists are good?  haha  Go to Canada and visit some places in Ontario.  I am sure you will find a few that are not up to par.  So, western trained doesn't always mean safe and secure.

So true,
The Dentist I use is very reasonable and I've had no problem with my crowns.
He doesn't speak much English but enough to communicate. He's quite clever a picking up English as well.

I found a great dentist in Nanjing. Spotless facility, all staff using proper sterilization techniques, a great view out the windows, imported state of the art techniques, and a big-screen tv for your quests.  Let me know if you want more details. With the new almost fast train, to be followed by the fast train, makes the trip worthwhile.

Thanks Osofarinchina.

Any chance you can post some prices, to give people an idea of what they might be getting into?  I plan on going to Nanjing once the fast trains officially start up, and if the prices are what I hope to pay, then I might do some dental work there.

I just thought about scanning the net for information about dental clinics in Thailand.  I always have heard good things about the doctors/dentists from there, both domestic and foreign, and found the prices to be very reasonable.  Most places have at least a few dentists from various places like the US, Europe, and so on.  Next time I vacation there, I might get some dental work done.  One place that I heard was good charges about the equivalent of almost 14,000RMB for dental implants, along with all the x-rays, CT scanning, medication, which I think is good.  Titanium implants.....sounds like some bulletproof teeth.  haha

I am just throwing this info out there for people that are looking for alternatives to what is here in Hefei, and China in general.

Today, I went to check out the dental office that Aussie Mike went to for his crown replacements, and found the guy to be quite friendly and nice.  I asked for a general price to do one filling and he said around 50RMB.  That is quite a bargain if this guy turns out to be pain free in terms of his work.  I picked up a business card from him.  His cell number is 13083082061.  As Aussie Mike said, his English might not be fluent, but he gets your drift.  I am going to ask my wife to call him just to give him a general outline of how much work is needed in my teeth, and find out more information about what he thinks of it.

Here is a little more information about Dany Tse's clinic. I had two crowns replaced and two minor fillings done by Dr. Hu under Dr. Tse's direction. The crowns were "full noble metal" and cost about 4000 RMB each. The fillings, digital x-rays, cleaning and evaluation were all in the 50 to 200 RMB range. Being non-fluent in Chinese, I was glad to be able to discuss my teeth and the planned work with Dr. Tse in English. Two other dentists trained and experienced in the U.S. are also involved in the clinic. "Gentle Dental" is located on Maan Shan Lu about halfway between Tun Xi Lu and Wuhu Lu. Hours are daily 09:00 to 19:00. Buses 902, 235, 145, 137, 23, and 17 stop nearby. Calling Dr. Tse's mobile phone as suggested by earlier posts is still an excellent to make first contact. He is very friendly, makes appointments quickly, and will SMS directions for a taxi. You can also call an "English language" phone in the office at 13866737674.

Bruce,

I am glad that you are content with what was offered to you by him, but just because you are not fluent in Chinese, doesn't mean you can't seek alternatives elsewhere for a much lower rate for the same kind of work.  Even if I did encounter a dentist that couldn't speak English, I have a friend of mine who can translate everything perfectly to me.

And just to add something that I forgot to say.  I think Dany is a great guy, patient, and so on, but to be honest, if he is not the one doing the actual work, then in my experience, the work was just average.  He also was supervising a filling that I had done, but without him doing the actual work, all you are getting from there is "someone who can speak English" with you.

Each to his own I guess.

I had work done by Danny and the girls in the old suite on Huangshan Lu. It was not cheap - around 4k. When he was moving suites I rang him and he was very helpful to translate for me with another dentist.
My gripe with the girls at Huangshan Lu clinic was that they should have picked up on anothert broken tooth. I could feel it with my tongue and sure enough not long after it became very troublesome.
Yesterday I had an appointment with Gentle Dental but Danny was not well and I tried to find his clinic from Danny's directions but couldn't, so I went back to the other clinic near Qingyang Lu. A nice lady dentist pulled the tooth. It was not easy as it was broken and took her about 45 mins - 50 yuan total including the local anaesthetic.
I am not going to argue about that one folks. Danny is a great man and I appreciate all his help and assistance and he does a good job.

I agree, Dany is a good dentist and from what I have seen, a good man.  But, what I am saying, is that Dany is not the only "good dentist, good man" out there.  And if someone finds someone like that, who charges a considerable amount lower, they should consider it.

Had undergone tooth filling (for my wife) and cleaning (for me) for a little over RMB600 last August 2008.

Price was reasonable. However, discount for expats should be a plus, right Danny?

to rgeczi:
i am glad i was able to read about this "good dentist in hefei". it is very helpful! does Dentist Danny can speak English? as you said He came from US, because it is easier to communicate if he can especially if you're in pain. i planned to visit him next week to inquire it he can remove my impacted tooth. I wanted to go to the dental hospital but i am afraid nobody knows how to talk in english....because i totally can't speak in chinese. looking forward to your respond before next week...

thanks a lot and your help is highly appreaciated.

American dentist

Dany Tse 13696517099

Pulled two of my wisdom teeth without any problems.

Dany Tse is a good dentist and I have no problem with his services. I remember the time when my tooth was not in good condition and my friend told me that I should go to Tse. Fortunately during the operation, I have felt no pain at that time.
